Some days can be a struggle. I've come from working retail in a major hardware warehouse chain, to now find myself sitting in front of a computer most days digitally twiddling my thumbs.
I guess this is partly why I've decided to start this blog up; to give me something to do when I've already read the internet from cover to cover, and to help me vent (bits) about my life.
One thing I have found is that it can be exceptionally difficult trying to look busy when sitting at a computer.
When working at my previous job, I could always grab a broom and push that around half-arsed, pick up stock and move it around some, or just walk around with the phone to my ear pretending I was on a call to a customer. Now I'm left to answer phones, program and configure our products, and learn about the industry.
I've been here at my new job for 9 months now and have settled in quite comfortably. Now, I have to really plan ahead or at least take my procrastination in spurts. Generally this consists of being half-way through a job and stopping to read a forum - index finger poised over the mouse, ready to minimize the browser to make it look like I'm in a company program, or quickly changing to a news page to pretend I'm at least looking at something acceptable (should read 'intelligent' or 'anything other than forums about laser skirmish, or online comics, or Twitter').
For the first few months of my job I found it really hard work trying to look busy. I've since been told that I'm doing that part of my job well as, apparently, the guy I replaced didn't even make an effort to look like he was doing anything other than just surfing the net.
What can I say... I aspire to perform at my peak.
